Will HMRC accept cheques?

Is it legal to bank a six month old HMRC cheque?

The issuing bank may have a policy not to honour those over six months old supposing they happen to notice (which they usually don’t on hand written cheques) but it’s perfectly legal to bank it. The HMRC cheque is probably machine printed in which case they may be more likely to pick up the date being more than six months.

Can a cheque be cashed into an Overseas Bank?

You should still be able to pay the cheque into an overseas bank – although there will probably be a charge and it may take a while to clear. Alternatively if you have friends or relatives still in the UK you could ask HMRC to cancel the cheque and send it to a nominated person here who could cash it for you and send you the money.
