Why have HMRC sent me a letter?

By Mia Moss

You may receive a letter from HMRC asking you to contact us about your repayment claim. We may ask you to provide extra information. This allows us to check your identity and verify your repayment claim. You must respond to the letter as instructed so we can make any repayments owed to you as soon as possible.

Why do I have to pay HMRC payments?

Payments on account are tax payments made twice a year by self-employed Self Assessment taxpayers to spread the cost of the upcoming year’s tax. They’re calculated based on your previous year’s tax bill. In other words, HMRC is making a prediction about your future income based on your past income.

Letters are popular because they are a genuine means of contact used by the Revenue and Customs office. Emails and text messages will never ask for payment; mailed requests do. But you should bear in mind that HMRC are rarely committed to ‘immediate payment’, especially with their first request on a tax issue.

What is a discovery investigation HMRC?

What is an HMRC assessment?

If you do not send your VAT Return and pay any VAT due on time, you will get a ‘ VAT notice of assessment of tax’ from HM Revenue and Customs ( HMRC ), telling you how much VAT they think you owe.
